I was really anxious to talk with Chris Pratt. I have been a fan of his work over the years and was so excited to meet him in person. He was just as charming and funny as I thought he would be. You know, the kind of guy you would love to have a couple drinks with and just laugh at all of his jokes. My husband is a big fan of his wife, Anna Ferris, so maybe we can swap for a day. Just kidding… Anyways.
Chris Pratt plays Peter Quill aka Star-Lord in the soon to be summer hit Guardians of the Galaxy, released in theaters August 1!
When Chris Pratt heard that we saw the Guardians of the Galaxy he said, ” Dude, isn’t it a great movie?!”
Do you feel any added pressure being the face of a new franchise?
I guess if I was smart, I would feel pressure, but I kind of don’t. The studios have most of the pressure because they are the ones putting all the money into the film. They set you up so you don’t feel that pressure. They don’t want you to fail, so they do everything they can to make sure things go well.
Chris Pratt loved comic books when he was a kid and would often draw and paint the characters. He loved the artistry and the physicality of the characters. One time he won $300 playing Bingo with his mom, and bought $300 worth of comics. He remembers that one of them that he purchased was Guardians of the Galaxy.
For me the stories weren’t what grabbed me, it was the covers and the cool art on the inside and out . So some of the other comics that I collected were Ghost Rider, the one with the glow in the dark cover, I had a Bart Man number one. I had a stack of Richie Riches I got at a garage sale, old, old ones. And I had a big stack of Conan I think it was the Samarian or something. They were really sexy. I remember, they were kind of like the closest thing I had to smut when I was a kid, were like these things (we all laughed) Conan Comic Books. And you know, of course some Spider Man, some X-Men, some Wolverine, a lot of Punisher Twenty-ninety-nine was another one I collected.
What is your most memorable moment?
That very first day we were on a set in an area that’s called Morag. It was a real set, it looks so fantastical and epic, you assume it’s all green screen. We were outside at Longcross Studios, I’ll never forget this. I was wearing Quill’s long jacket for the first time. Actually another great moment is the first time I put that jacket on and walked, I was like, oh my god, the jacket was totally telling me how Peter Quill would walk. I’m running, there’s a wind blowing like probably sixty seventy miles an hour, rain machines, guys are shooting real water from real ponds, hundreds of feet up in the air. And we’re on an outdoor set that’s probably a hundred and fifty yards long, a hundred and fifty yards wide. So it’s a massive like two football fields put together with green screen all the way around these giant like shipping containers stacked ninety feet high. So there’s an element of green screen around the entire horizon, but on the inside it was like a sea had just drained out and it revealed this city that had been underwater for ten thousand years. That was the moment where I thought, holy crap. This is happening, I’m on this movie, and it’s going to be epic.
How does it feel knowing you’re an iconic hero for younger kids of this generation?
That to me is the greatest part of all this. I remember pretending to be Han Solo in my backyard, or pretending to be Indiana Jones, or Luke Skywalker as a kid. Comic books and storytelling of this magnitude is what really helped me cultivate my imagination as a young kid. To think that kids are going to be out there and they’re going to watch this and they’re going to feel that way. I’ve been Googling synonyms for surreal just to try to help explain what it feels like. It’s really cool. And I think to me that by far is the greatest feeling knowing I’m going to be a hero to these kids.
How much training did you have to do for the fight scene?
Oh the fight scenes were pretty intensive. We had about six weeks of rehearsal before we even started shooting in London and we did stunt rehearsals every single day. So a big part of that was learning, training, and refining the fight scenes. We would learn a fight scene for a couple of weeks and then it would end up changing, and we’d learn it again. I secretly think it was a way for them to get me to lose even more weight. They’re like, Hey, Chris, even more stunt rehearsal, can you believe it this stunt is you running on a treadmill. We did a ton of training.
It was really fun and is the stuff I really like. I was an athlete growing up and played sports. It’s just nice to be part of a team of athletic people and being coach-able and being told what to do and getting better at it day-by-day at doing something physical. That, that to me is a nice break from the mental exhaustion that can come with acting. You don’t have to think too hard to do stunts, which is just perfect for me.
How does it feel to have an action figure doll made of yourself?
It’s pretty crazy and weird. My friend has a Peter Quill doll that you push a button and my voice comes out of it. So my friend treats me like Flat Stanley. Everywhere they go they pictures of me (my doll) with them. Oh look at Star Lord, Star Lord at Subway, etc.
Did you have any input in the soundtrack? What’s your favorite song?
I have a contentious relationship with that soundtrack because it is on my iPod list to run and work out to. So I love and hate all of those songs. (We all laughed) For me the best one was probably Ooh Child ’cause it has a certain beats per minute that matched with my running pace. And for me when I’m running, I need to match my feet to the music, so I can forget how terrible it is that I’m running.
My favorite Star-Lord quote? “I am distracting you, you turd!” I think that would have to be one of my favorite scenes too! Watch Chris Pratt in Guardians of the galaxy!
