This past weekend I not only had the amazing opportunity to attend the Tribeca Film Festival red carpet preview of The Avengers, I was also able to interview two of the stars from the film, Tom Hiddleston (Loki) and Cobie Smulders (S.H.I.E.L.D Agent Maria Hill). Our interviews took place at the beautiful Trump Soho just before the stars walked the red carpet . They were both in their red carpet looks and looked amazing! Cobie was wearing a beautiful long tangerine dress with beaded shoulders and gold jewelry. Her gold clutch and shoes completed her look. She looked beautiful!

I was so excited to meet Cobie because I am such a huge fan of her and her show How I Met Your Mother. Much like her character Robin Scherbatsky, she was very down to earth, funny, and real. Cobie talked with us about her The Avengers character S.H.I.E.L.D Agent Maria Hill, working with Director Joss Whedon, and being a role model to little girls!

Tell us about your character Maria Hill?
Maria Hill works at S.H.I.E.L.D. She’s a very high ranking officer and she sort of works directly under Nick Fury. You know, there’s lots of debates about how powerful she is, because me and Fury get into it a little bit. She sort of commands the Hellcarrier and she’s also a bit of a task master.
Its funny, when I got this role, I started reading all the comic books and also all the blogs, and what anyone had to say about the character. I was trying to learn as much as I could. And she’s like described as like the biggest b**** in the universe. (We all laughed) but I hate that so much. If you’re a woman in a powerful position, you get labeled a b****. But if a man is in that position, he’s just got to do his job. Yeah, so it was, it was kind of cool to approach a role with that kind of stigma behind it, and just kind of own it, especially with Maria Hill in the way that she works with Nick Fury. Nick Fury follows his gut instincts a lot, I mean the whole beginning of this movie. He’s sort of like the Avengers initiative and is sort of what this whole movie is about. And it’s about bringing all of these super heroes together, as an emergency basis only. Maria Hill sees that as a huge threat. I mean, even to have Hulk on the Hellcarrier alone is, is a bad idea, it puts humans lives at risk. She sort of butts head with him, but in, in kind of a great way. She kind of brings him back down to Earth, but they have this awesome arc of their relationship, and by the end she sort of sees why he’s breaking the S.H.I.E.L.D.
Cobie started laughing and said that was the longest answer ever and that she was sorry. We of course did not mind, we were so excited to have her sitting in the room talking with us! She then told us that she was at home being a Mom for the past 3 days and has not really talked so she’s now feeling kind of chatty. We all laughed because as moms ourselves, we knew exactly what she meant.
You work with Neil Patrick Harris and Alyson Hannigan on How I Met Your Mother, who have both worked with Joss Whedon. Did they have any words of wisdom for this film?
Yeah, it wasn’t a question of like, words of wisdom it was just like a blanket statement of like, you’re so lucky. (We all laughed) I’m so excited to get to work with him, because he truly is like an actors’ director. And he took so much care, especially with me playing Maria Hill, who’s a new character. He knows so much, I mean he’s a fan boy, he knows everything there is to know about comic books. And was the guy, a kid, at Comic-Con from its inception, you know. And so he knew so much about her and about S.H.I.E.L.D. and he was there from the getgo, really. And I think that Allison actually- when I went in to audition, and she texted him or called him and said, you know, Cobie went in and read today, make sure you go in and see the tape or whatever. I’ve known Joss mainly from going to their house for birthday parties and such. So, they were just excited for me to get to work with him.
Would you say this film would appeal to families?
You know what I like about this film is it’s kind of a dysfunctional family, like it’s the way that these- all these sort of separate superheroes have to come together to succeed. And I feel like there’s sort of like a team, a family dynamic within that- and it’s cool to see them rise above their personal issues. And sort of accomplish the goal.
How do you feel about being a role model now for little girls because of your role?
That’s an amazing thought, and I don’t think I’ve let myself go there, but it’s a wonderful idea. I have a daughter, she’ll be three. It’s so interesting to have a daughter growing up who actually wants to learn, to grow up like a girl. I’m not really like that. I’m kind of a tomboy but then it’s going to be cool for her hopefully to see me in an action role when she gets older. If I can empower any girls anywhere, I’m happy to do it. Yeah. That’s cool.
