I am still in shock that I was able to sit across a table from Hugh Jackman. My heart is still a flutter. Not only is he an incredibly talented actor and Broadway performer, he is a genuinely nice guy. And if you can believe it or not, even better looking in person.
You will see what I mean. Here is Hugh Jackman’s answer when asked if his kids have seen Real Steel. I could listen to him talk all day long. He is such a great story teller.
I am going to take you back a little. When I read the script, I am not proud of this moment, I had the script for like 3 days, and was busy and had not read it yet. Moms, dads, you know what it is like? Then my agent rang and was like, “Shawn is actually flying into New York for another thing and wants to meet with you in the morning to discuss the script.” I was like, no problem. It was like 8:00 at night, and I was just about to read to my son, I had just read to my daughter, he asked me to read him Tin Tin. He loves Tin Tin. I said how about we read this really cool story called Real Steel it’s about robots?. He was like really, a script? I told him I would read only a few pages. My son always draws when I read to him. He was drawing, and I was reading and getting really into the script, and then I looked up, and Oscar was like, “Go on, go on, go on!” He was so into it. And then he made me read the script to him for at least 10 nights in a row and always asked for me to read more. He loved the script.
He sat next to me when we went to see the film. It was the first time I have ever taken the kids to a film of mine, because none of my films have really been applicable I thought for them. So he was there, and my daughter who was only six. I just knew she would love it. I am giving you background here. My daughter ever since she was 2 if you put on soft rock, she would be like, “urgh,” but if you put on heavy metal she would be like this (then he head bangs). She is a mosh pit girl. So I knew she would love this movie. I asked her as she was watching it if she was enjoying it, and she said, ” I love Noisy Boy!” I said really, what about Atom? She goes, “No, I love Atom too.” I said why do you love Atom? She said, “Because he understands Dakota.” So sweet.
So anyways. Yes, is the very long answer to the question, and they loved it.
I saw the movie with my mother-in-law who is 75, my wife, and my 2 kids, and all of them were cheering, and crying. They just loved it. It was really a great moment for me to genuinely have all 3 of those generations love it.
When asked if he felt Real Steel was appropriate for his 6 year old daughter, this is what he had to say.
I had a father that thought if a movie was PG 13, you can watch that movie when you turn 13. He thought if that is what they are saying it is rated, that is what I am going to do. I was the only kid not to see Star Wars until I was 13. The movie came out when I was 7. I saw that movie 6 years later. For my age, people were obsessed with that movie. My friends had birthday parties that were Star Wars, and I could not go to the party. I think you have to take it on a movie by movie basis. I think you really have to look at it and you have to do as a parent what you feel comfortable with.
What I have realized is that the movie plays on different levels for different audiences. My son really got into the relationship with the boy and the robot, and my daughter loved the robot stuff. They loved that. But the father son story, the estranged son, I do not think that really hit home for them. For me it hits home. I think for you guys that is what hits home. And that is what is so good about the movie.
This movie is rated PG13. Personally, I think the movie is appropriate for 10 and up because of the language and a particular fight scene. But like Hugh Jackman said, you have to do as a parent what you feel comfortable with. You know your child best.

After reading all these great RealSteel posts I definitely must watch it with my husband. I’m sure he would like it a lot.
You lucky duck! I am so jealous!!!
I was just showing the trailer to my husband the other night! Robots? Boxing? I was on board from the start & I think I have him excited about it, too.
And the interview? I am 100% jealous! WOW! Although I’d probably just stare if I ever met Hugh Jackman in person.
I took my boys last night, we loved it! I bet it was amazing getting to meet Hugh Jackman, OMG! Go you! :)
I want to take my 3 boys to see this movie – they will love it and I get to watch HUGH! Thanks for the post.
OH.NO.YOU.DID.NOT get to meet Hugh Jackman! Can you see the green? Seriously? I’m so green right now, it’s ridiculous! Sounds like an awesome movie and this was a great interview! But I’m not speaking to you anymore for the record! I just can’t! :)
Now that is just cool. I am dying to be you right now…..
I am soooo jealous that you got to meet him! Awesome post!
So, he’s just as nice as you would assume, huh?
One quibble, though- I’m the same age and I don’t think the PG-13 rating came until after Star Wars. Okay. I am a total dork and checked. PG-13 came out in 1984 (interesting!), the year after the third Star Wars movie (or sixth, depending on how you think of it) was released. So his dad was just a jerk…
Not sure if I could have sat across from Hugh without passing out…so handsome! I can’t wait to see this movie! I’ve heard nothing but great things about it! Great interview! Thanks for asking the age question…all my girls are under 8yrs and they love movies like this.
Oh, definitely swoon-worthy pic right there! I am going to check this movie out…my kids are 9 and 11 and I think they might really enjoy it!
My husband and I attended a prescreening. Honestly, I didn’t expect much from the previews, but I’m all about a date night and a movie. I LOVED it. I really felt like I was part of that last fight scene, right there in the crowd.
I so wanna see this movie! Can’t believe you had the opportunity to meet and talk to Hugh Jackman! Awesome!
Woah. Hugh Jackman is awesome. Its good to see him in more family oriented films. Congrats for being part of this memorable experience!
