Edible Clay – Creating Art with a Toddler

Family and Life in Las Vegas

Welcome to the seventh week of Toddler Talk Thursday! Where Family and Life in Las Vegas, Crazy about my Baybah, and My Life as a Sippy Cup Mom Talk all things Toddler!

Toddler Talk Thursday was created as a place for moms and dads of toddlers to come together over a weekly topic and share ideas, go-to toys, or products. It is a great way to meet other bloggers of toddlers. Each week the topic will be different; we invite you to link up, share your weekly Toddler Talk!!

Each week the hosts will travel around to each blog that links up, and pick an idea, story, or picture they think was a great example of that weeks topic. In order to qualify for this you need to blog about this week’s topic, and follow the hosts. Comments letting us know you are participating are always great too. If we choose your blog, we will link back to your post the following week.

Our highlighted blog this week is:

This week’s topic is  : Creating Art with a Toddler

I am so excited about this weeks topic.  I absolutely love art, I love it so much that I teach it to middle schoolers.  Creating artwork with Baybah has been a little bit of a challenge. Unlike middle schoolers, Baybah puts EVERYTHING in his mouth, EVERYTHING! I made the mistake of getting him these really cute crayola toddler crayons to use, but the second I gave one to him, he bit the tip of the crayon off:(  I should have known that was going to happen.  I had to think outside of the box if I wanted Baybah to experiment with art, so I searched online for edible clay.    The clay I made worked perfect and was so easy to make. Plus, Baybah loved playing with it.  He loved squishing it, stretching it, pushing on it, and yes, at times putting it in his mouth.  He never really ate it, but I won’t say he did not want to.
When he gets a little older, this will be so fun to roll out and use cookie cutters on to make different shapes.
There are so many different versions out there of this clay, but here is the version we used:
1 c peanut butter
2 c powdered sugar
1/2 c honey
Mix together, and store in a ziplock
Yes, it is filled with sugar, but I feel more comfortable Baybah getting that in his mouth than any store bought product.
Baybah also loves to finger paint, but keeping him in one place is another obstacle.  To help this situation, we finger paint in the bathtub.  I actually got this idea from fellow blogger Mandy over at The Lucky 7.  I tape paper to the bottom of the tub, and let Baybah at it.  I make sure to use non-toxic, washable paint, because the little guy loves to rub it all over his face too.  I love to use just the primary colors- red, yellow, and blue -that way Baybah can see what happens when the colors are mixed together.
I love that we not only get a masterpiece, but also get little finger and toe prints.
I have loved doing this weeks theme Art with a Toddler so much that I have decided to do it as a regular topic on my blog.  So stay tuned for more ideas for creating art with your toddler, and crafts for mommy too!

  2. That is a fantastic idea!! I am so going to do that with the tub! It is almost like one of those DUH moments!! :)
Baybah is too sweet – Squish would have eaten it for sure!!
And I agree better than anything store bought!

  3. I love the one in the bathtub and with paint on his head!! I'm not brave enough for that yet! I will definitely be checking back for more art ideas. Like I said in my post, not my strong point.

  4. Thanks so much for highlighting my blog this week!
I love the pictures of Baybah playing with the clay. It's such a good idea to make it edible. I may have to try that out with Davis, I'm sure he'd love it.

  5. Stephanie-jean Life:SemiCrunchy says:

Great idea indeed! I have not yet ventured into the world of finger painting with my 2 1/2 year old out of the fear of a massive mess!

    Found you through Mingle Monday!

  6. Such a great idea!! I only wish that my little one wasn’t allergic to peanuts. :( Maybe my older one would have fun with this! :)
